Our Special Island is a tablet game-based educational platform for young children in Tonga that inspires positive attitudes towards healthy eating and traditional foods through play, music and culture.
I led the design and delivery of the program, in partnership with Melbourne design studio Millipede, in addition to local communities and teachers.
Implemented in 10 primary schools across Tonga, the pilot was supported through Memorandum of Understandings I brokered with the Tongan Ministries of Education and Training, and Health. At the conclusion of the pilot, students demonstrated a 33% increase in their ability to identify healthy foods, 77% increase in their ability to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy foods, in addition to 90% of teachers recognising the benefits of using play and games to support student’s learning.
